While addressing a
gathering of more than 700 budding engineering
students of Regional Institute of Science and
Technology, (RIST) 9th Mile on the occasion of
FRESHERS’ SOCIAL-2016, Dr Dhrubhajyoti Saikia,
the Vice Chancellor of Cotton College State
University said that the engineering technology
should be mainly developed to solve the problems
of the society especially that of the rural
areas. About 300 odd newly admitted students
were welcome in the occasion by the management,
faculty and senior students of RIST.RIST, an
engineering college with a difference,
affiliated to the prestigious North Eastern Hill
University Shillong and approved by AICTE, New
Delhi and sponsored by ERD Foundation, Guwahati
offering courses in five core branches of
engineering. Mentioning various aspects of
science and technology, Dr Saikia, who was the
Chief Guest in the function, said every student
of science should imagine the problems in and
around our society which is the basis of
development of all technologies. He expressed
his concerned over the fact that the students
pursuing their higher studies with science
stream is much less compared to others and it is
the need of the hour to encourage more and more
students to opt for their higher studies with
science stream and they should be provided with
the adequate facilities so that they can come up
with new and innovative research finding which
can be utilized to solve the problems of the
human society.
Dr H.K Barua, a renowned structural engineer of
the region and Director, Academics of RIST,
while welcoming the new comers said that the
students who have come to this institute have
got four long years in front of them and they
should utilize these precious years of their
stay in the institute and work hard to make them
employable by the industries. He expressed
satisfaction over the brilliant team of faculty
members who are guided by large numbers of
eminent and senior professors of the institute
who are dedicating their efforts for imparting a
high standard of technical education to the
students.
Dr N.K Choudhury, the former Vice Chancellor of
Gauhati University and the principal advisor of
ERD Foundation, Guwahati, while addressing the
gathering said that the students who have taken
admission in to this institute will get all the
facilities at par with the top institute of the
country and they should leave no stone unturned
to make them asset for the society. He welcomed
all the newly admitted students and wished them
a bright career ahead.
Ms Rashni Hira, a student of Computer Science
and Engineering 1st semester who was awarded
with MiSS FRESHER-2016 and Mr Diptanu Deb, a
student of Civil Engineering first semester was
awarded with MR. FRESHER-2016 and MR Sanjay
Zakuma was awarded with SMART FRESHER
AWARD-2016.
The day long programme blended with a large
number of brilliant performances by the freshers
finally concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr
U.K Sarma, Executive Director, RIST
